Search Examples
The LC Catalog contains more than 500 keyword, left-match, and headings indexes. Commonly used indexes are available from drop-down menus in Browse, Advanced Search, and Keyword Search. You may also use any keyword or left-match index in Keyword (EXPERT) search, a powerful, command-driven method for finding words or phrases located anywhere in the record.
The following search examples offer a sampling of available commands and functions. For clarity, index codes are displayed in ALL CAPS (in actual searching, these codes may be entered in upper or lower case).
Searching All Variable Data Fields
GKEY (Keyword Anywhere)
Keyword search for words or phrases in any variable data field of a bibliographic record (MARC fields 010-999). Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) GKEY queries with multiple terms. Search terms can be found in one or more fields of the record. Word order does not matter unless search terms are entered as a phrase. Truncation, wildcards, and limits are available.

HKEY (Holdings Keyword)

Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) HKEY queries with multiple terms. Search terms can be found in one or more fields of the record. Searching Names of People, Corporate Bodies, and Meetings

NALL (Name)
Left-match search for items created by people, corporate bodies, or meetings or items about people, corporate bodies, or meetings (MARC X00, X10, and X11 author/creator, subject, and series fields). Beginning with the left-most word, enter personal names in last name-first name order, corporate and meeting names in direct order. NALL searches across subfields. Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) NALL queries with multiple terms. Truncation is not automatic; consider using a question mark to truncate your query.

NAME (Authors/Creators)
Browse through alphanumerically ordered lists of controlled names for people, corporate bodies, or meetings (MARC X00, X10, and X11 author/creator and series fields). These "authorized headings" - along with cross-references and scope notes - are maintained in LC Authorities. Most authors/creators are also searchable as subjects.
Two types of browse searches are available:
- Beginning with searches: enter personal names in last name-first name order, corporate and meeting names in direct order
- Containing searches: enter any word in author/creator names
Truncation is automatic; wildcards are available in containing searches only. When name/title information is present, author/creator names are indexed in NAME and names/titles in Names/Titles Browse.

Keyword search for creation/production credits and participant/performer information (MARC fields 508, 511, and 245 $c). Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) KPRF queries with multiple terms. Search terms can be found in one or more fields of the record. Word order does not matter unless search terms are entered as a phrase; in phrases, enter names as they normally appear rather than in inverted order. Truncation, wildcards, and limits are available.

Combined Searches: Names of People, Corporate Bodies, and Meetings
Bibliographic and holdings keyword index codes can be combined with other keyword index codes in search queries. Left-match index codes, however, cannot be combined with other index codes in search queries.

Searching Subjects
KSUB (Subject: All)

SALL (Subject)
Left-match search for authorized subjects (MARC fields 6XX). Word order is precise. Beginning with the left-most word, enter subjects in direct order, with the exception of personal names which are entered in last name-first name order. SALL searches across subfields. Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) SALL queries with multiple terms. Omit leading articles from titles. Truncation is not automatic; consider using a question mark to truncate your query.

SUBJ (Subjects)
Browse through alphanumerically ordered lists of controlled subjects for topical terms, geographical place names, genre/form terms, and most authors/creators, names/titles, and series/uniform titles (MARC fields 600, 610, 611, 630, 650, 651, and 655). These "authorized headings" - along with cross-references and scope notes - are maintained in LC Authorities. Two types of browse searches are available:

KTIL (Title: All)

Left-match search for main and alternate titles, uniform titles, series titles, and titles in names/titles (MARC fields 130, 222, 240, 245, 246, 247, 4XX, 70X-75X added entries, 76X-78X linking entries, and 8XX). TALL does not search for titles in subjects. Word order is precise - enter titles beginning with the left-most word, omitting leading articles. TALL searches across subfields. Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) TALL queries with multiple terms. While TITLES beginning with (TALL) searches in Browse truncate queries automatically, in Keyword (EXPERT) TALL searches, truncation is not automatic - consider abbreviating your query using a question mark. TALL is useful for retrieving common titles (such as: "Daily News") across multiple title fields and for searching across title subfields (such as: "Canterbury tales : adapted from Geoffrey Chaucer's poem").

Left-match search for main title only (MARC field 245). Word order is precise - enter the main title beginning with the left-most word, omitting leading articles. 2450 searches across subfields. Punctuation and spacing are treated as "word separators;" use quoted phrases in Keyword (EXPERT) 2450 queries with multiple terms. While TITLE (main) beginning with (2450) searches in Browse truncate queries automatically, in Keyword (EXPERT) 2450 searches, truncation is not automatic - consider abbreviating your query using a question mark. 2450 is useful for retrieving common titles (such as: "Daily News") when they appear as the main title of a work and for searching across main title subfields (such as: "Canterbury tales : adapted from Geoffrey Chaucer's poem").

AUTH (Names/Titles)
Browse through alphanumerically ordered lists of controlled authors/creators and the titles, uniform titles, or series titles with which these persons, corporate bodies, or meetings are associated (MARC fields 1XX and the first matched 240, 243 , or 245; 400, 410, 411; 700, 710, 711; and 800, 810, 811). These "authorized headings" - along with cross-references and scope notes - are maintained in LC Authorities. Two types of browse searches are available:
- Beginning with searches: enter author/creator names (personal names in last name-first name order, corporate and meeting names in direct order), followed by titles starting with the first word and omitting leading articles; author/creator names must be complete before entering titles
- Containing searches: enter any word in author/creator names or associated titles
Truncation is automatic; wildcards are available in containing searches only. Most names/titles are also searchable as subjects. Author/creator names in names/titles are also indexed in Authors/Creators Browse.
